Flatbed Towing Versus Wheel Lift: Which Fits?

A disabled vehicle on the Island is not always sitting in an open, level parking lot. What is flatbed towing?

Flatbed towing uses a truck with a hydraulic deck that tilts and slides back to the ground. Your vehicle is pulled or winched onto the deck, then secured with proper tie-downs so all four wheels travel off the road.

For many passenger vehicles, flatbed towing is the preferred option because it avoids rolling the vehicle’s wheels during transport. What is wheel-lift towing?

Modern wheel lifts are designed to support the vehicle by its tyres or wheels rather than attaching directly to the bumper, which makes them more controlled than older hook-and-chain towing methods.

Wheel-lift towing can be a very efficient solution for a short tow, especially when access is limited. The truck can often work in spaces where a flatbed cannot fully deploy. It is commonly useful for two-wheel-drive vehicles when the correct end is lifted and the remaining wheels can roll safely.

For example, a front-wheel-drive car is generally towed with its front wheels lifted. A rear-wheel-drive vehicle is generally towed with its rear wheels lifted. Flatbed towing generally offers the broadest protection for vehicles with sensitive drivetrains, low ground clearance, accident damage, or unknown mechanical issues. It also reduces road exposure for the towed vehicle, since no tyres are turning during the trip. Wheel-lift towing is often faster to set up in cramped areas and can be a practical choice for a straightforward local tow. It can also be the safer operational choice when there is not enough room to load a flatbed without blocking traffic or creating another hazard.

Neither method should be selected solely because it is familiar. An all-wheel-drive crossover may look like an ordinary small SUV, but towing it with two wheels on the ground can damage the drivetrain if the correct procedures are not followed. Similarly, a front-wheel-drive sedan with a damaged front suspension may not be safe for a standard wheel-lift setup even though its drivetrain would normally allow it.

When a flatbed is usually the better call

A flatbed is commonly the safest choice when your vehicle is AWD, 4x4, electric, hybrid, very low to the ground, heavily modified, or equipped with a drivetrain that cannot be towed with wheels rolling. It is also the sensible option after a collision, when you have a broken axle, damaged steering, a seized wheel, or a transmission problem that leaves the towing requirements unclear.

Owners of specialty cars often request a flatbed because of ground clearance concerns. That request makes sense, but loading angle still matters. A trained operator may use the right approach, ramps, or recovery techniques to reduce the risk of contact with the bumper, splitter, or underside of the vehicle.

Flatbeds are also useful for non-running vehicles headed to repair, storage, auction, or scrap removal. If your vehicle will not start, cannot be shifted normally, or has been sitting for an extended period, tell the dispatcher. When wheel lift towing makes sense

It can also reduce the time your vehicle occupies a roadside shoulder. On wet Vancouver Island roads or high-traffic routes, efficient setup matters. The goal is not simply to get the vehicle moving quickly. It is to remove it from danger without taking shortcuts with securing, lighting, traffic control, or drivetrain protection.
