Moving a compact excavator from Parksville to a job site is not the same as towing a passenger vehicle. A proper guide to heavy equipment transport starts with the details that determine whether the move is safe, legal, and on schedule: the machine’s actual weight, its dimensions, the loading location, the route, and the unloading conditions at the other end.
For contractors, farms, property owners, and industrial operators across Vancouver Island, equipment transport is often part of a busy workday. A missed delivery can hold up an entire crew. Planning the move properly protects your equipment, the people around it, and the job timeline.
Start With the Machine, Not the Trailer
The first question is not, “What trailer is available?” It is, “What exactly is being moved?” Manufacturer specifications are useful, but the transport provider also needs to know what is attached to the machine and what condition it is in for travel.
Provide the make, model, approximate operating weight, overall width, height, and length. Include buckets, forks, blades, booms, augers, rippers, hydraulic attachments, toolboxes, and any other items that will travel with the equipment. Plan the Route Before Loading

Do not assume a permit is unnecessary because the equipment is only travelling a short distance. The route still matters. Prepare Equipment for Transport
A few minutes of preparation can prevent damage and delays. Securement Is a Safety System
Heavy equipment is not secured with one chain and a quick visual check. The goal is to prevent forward, rearward, sideways, and vertical movement throughout the trip.
The number and placement of tie-downs depend on the load. Tracks, wheels, articulation points, attachments, and the machine’s centre of gravity all affect the securement plan. Chains should be attached to designated structural points where possible, not to vulnerable components that could bend, crack, or shift under load.
Securement should also be checked after the load has travelled a short distance and during longer trips. Road vibration, settling, and weather can change tension. This is routine professional practice, not an optional extra.
Consider Timing, Weather, and Site Coordination
Equipment moves often fail because the machine is ready but the site is not. Before dispatching transport, confirm who will meet the driver, where the machine will be loaded or unloaded, and whether the site is open and accessible. Make sure gates are unlocked, vehicles are moved, and site personnel understand the delivery plan.
Weather is another practical factor on Vancouver Island. Heavy rain can soften job sites and gravel access roads. Wind can affect tall or wide loads. Winter conditions can reduce traction and make steep driveways or unmaintained roads unsuitable for a loaded truck. Sometimes the safest choice is to adjust the delivery time, use a different access point, or wait until the ground firms up.
Timing also affects cost and efficiency. Combining equipment, attachments, or related materials into one planned move may be more practical than arranging several separate trips. However, combining loads only works when the total weight, dimensions, securement, and unloading sequence remain safe. Saving a trip is not worth creating an overloaded or difficult-to-unload trailer.
What to Have Ready When Booking
Clear information helps your transport provider give the right recommendation and arrive prepared. Have the pickup and delivery addresses, machine make and model, approximate weight, dimensions, operating condition, attachment details, preferred timing, and site-access notes ready.
It is also helpful to mention obstacles such as narrow gates, low branches, steep grades, soft ground, ferry travel, or a machine parked behind other equipment. If the equipment needs to be moved from an off-road location, say so. Standard transport and off-road recovery are different jobs, even when the final destination is the same.
